THE PLEASANTVILLE COMMUNITY GARDEN RESTORATION WORK IS COMPLETE

We are thrilled to report that earlier this month the restoration of the original raised beds at the community garden was completed. We are deeply grateful to our members for their support and to the wonderful team at Northern Westchester BOCES for their guidance and skills. We could not have done this without the instructors and students who participated from the construction, carpentry and urban forestry programs in Yorktown.

Approximately 18 students and 3 instructors swarmed the garden at St. John’s Church on May 5th at 9:30am and completed the work within three hours. This included the assembly and installation of the new raised beds, the re-staining of the wood frame on the fence around the garden and the repair and reinstallation of the metal gate, which had broken off its hinges last fall. Students in the welding program repaired the hinges and the students in the automotive program gave the gate a new coat of paint. Both the quality of the work and their work ethic were truly inspiring.

On Mother’s Day, after the morning services, we were invited to join the congregation in the blessing of the garden by the new parish priest, Julia Offinger. It was a beautiful morning, and the garden sparkled in the morning sunlight. Sunflowers, native plants and new pollinators have been planted and mulched in the perimeter beds where children were invited to distribute colorful pebbles, which had been painted by our volunteers over the course of the last year. Please stop by and take a look!
