PCG February 2025 Blog: St. John’s Thrift Shop is Pleasantville's Best Kept Secret

While the PCG garden at St. John’s sleeps for the winter, the good work of gathering and sharing continues through the wonderful community efforts in the Thrift Shop located under the beautiful historic Episcopal Church on Sunnyside Ave. in Pleasantville.

This wonderful hub of thrifting activity was established back in 2016. The proceeds from the Thrift Shop support St. John's mission and ministries, including feeding the hungry, housing the unhoused, welcoming the refugee, and much more.

Volunteer and shop manager Rosemary Carlough says, “The St. John's Thrift Shop provides revenue to the church, as well as the funds for St. John’s Outreach donations. A portion of all sales are distributed quarterly to a variety of local organizations.” And the list is impressive! During 2024 alone, donations were made to:  A- Home, Open Arms for Refugees, Pleasantville Interfaith Food Pantry, Midnight Run, Episcopal Relief & Development, Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, New York Haiti Project, Shelter Box USA and YAI.

But there’s more! In addition, items from the shop have been donated to A-Home, which provides affordable housing in northern Westchester, as well as Open Arms for Refugees, which helps resettle people from other countries.

The shop would not be possible without a loyal group of dedicated volunteers who donate their time and talents. The shop has nineteen regular volunteers and is always looking for additional folks to join the team. Rosemary says, “Volunteers do not need to be members of St. John’s. About one-third of our current volunteers are community members who were regular shoppers and decided to also help with the store.”

The shop is open on Mondays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Rosemary says, “The Open Hours are not only the time to donate in-season, gently-used clothing and home goods and shop for treasures, but also an opportunity to connect with neighbors!” Volunteers are always needed and welcome. Rosemary encourages anyone who is interested to reach out to get involved. You can reach her by email at rpkcarl@verizon.net.

In addition to donating items that are in good condition and seasonally appropriate (see list below) there are other ways to help: the merchandising and sorting crew meets once a week to make sure all the new donations are priced, cleaned if necessary, and put out for sale in the appropriate section of the store.  Many customers comment on how nicely displayed our merchandise is and we agree! It’s a pleasure to shop there.

The thrift shop accepts donations during the hours the shop is open.  Donations should be in good condition and seasonally appropriate.
